As with skateparks, bicycle pump tracks are valuable park features, particularly for teens and young adults who are looking for a healthy outlet in local parks. These activities provide a positive, creative form of exercise and fill a void for teens who are not attracted to team sports. They teach empowerment and determination and create a sense of community and responsibility.
Sonoma is proud to be the home of world-class BMX freestyle cyclist Nikita Ducarroz, who scored a bronze media at the Tokyo Olympics. She and her family are strong advocated for constructing a new bicycle pump track at Maxwell Farms Regional Park. Ducarroz recognizes the immense value of cycling facilities for local teens and has claimed, "BMX saved my life."
As a teen, Ducarroz suffered debilitating anxiety and panic attacks that confined her to her home. Riding freed her from these challenges. "We had a bike park near our house where you could go ride," she remembers. "I thought, OK, I can go on my own, and I'll just turn around and come home whenever I want. By focusing on BMX bike riding, she overcame her anxiety and, ultimately, built a cycling career.
